Members are always encouraged to be creative and come up with their own occupations, but Isle Himaryn provides this list in case you are having difficulties choosing an occupation, should you decide your character should have one.
High-Ranked Imperial Official
Includes the occupations of Lord Premier, Praetor, and Constable. These officials must be either elected or appointed into their position. Descriptions of their duties can be found in the appropriate information threads. Only one Lord Premier, 2 Praetors, and 4 Constables can hold a position at a time. They are the highest-paying occupations in Himaryn.
Lord or Lady (Noble Families)
Usually of the Vikare clan, Lords and Ladies are descended from wealthy houses and depend on their existing family fortunes. They aim to become high-ranked imperial officials, so they can use the ridiculously generous salaries to continue their family dynasties. Almost all nobles make an effort to participate in politics one way or another.
Military Official
Includes generals, captains, commanders, combat trainers, sages, and strategists. The high bureaucracy of the military is a popular and glorious option for Vikare with no hope of receiving an inheritance, but the occupation comes with many responsibilities and duties on the Barbarian Territories far north of Himaryn. Such individuals must be prepared to be on campaign for seasons on end with little rest.
Landowner
Usually of either the Vikare or Salom Clan, landowners have purchased a large plot of land for money-making purposes. They usually employ either paid workers, servants, serfs, or slaves in plantations, farms, or mines. It is a very lucrative business, but these individuals are particularly despised by the Cruori.
Low-Ranked Imperial Official
Includes diplomats, scholars, office-workers, scribes, and all educated individuals that might be employed by Imperial Himaryn. These individuals are also usually of Vikare descent, and most are of the lesser Vikare families who have exhausted their family fortunes and need to depend on a regular salary. Second, third, and fourth children of a family may also pursue such occupations, knowing that the inheritance they receive will be much less than the oldest child.
Merchant
The broad classification of Merchant includes any individual that sells wares or services in a concrete location. This includes shop owners, inn keepers, blacksmiths, carpenters, chefs, ranchers, ferry drivers, and many others. They are usually of the Salom Clan, and are considered middle class. The dream of most Salommites is to open their own business and start a family. Many Salommites grow fairly well-to-do with their shops, and a small group of Merchants are heavily involved in politics.
Free Trader
The broad classification of Trader refers to any individual who actively transports goods across Himaryn (they typically do not make the products they sell; they buy them, then sell them at a higher price elsewhere). Due to Himaryn’s vast size, a large business is involved with transporting goods from one location to another. Some traders may participate in Caravans or Union/Networks, while others are freelance and wander about selling trinkets and rare goods (such as exotic fruit or jewelry). Messengers (passing messages and packages) are a class of Trader.
Soldier or Guard
The Imperial Army is open to all individuals, Vikare, Salom, and Cruori alike. Whether people enter voluntarily or are drafted into fighting in the Barbarian Front, being a soldier or guard is an occupation that requires basic training and comes with room, board, and a stable wage. While individuals are only required to serve one term, many re-enlist because they find military life more belly-fulfilling than scrounging for scraps as a beggar.
Sehali Hunter
The Sehali offers plenty of opportunities for those who have talents for hunting. A hunting union is based in the Summer Dens, where various hunters can come and work together to hunt the Sehali herds. The union dries, prepares, and sells the hunted meat to urban centers, and the profit is fairly split with everyone involved.
Worker or Commoner or Peasant
The common Cruori worker makes a living by either farming a small plot of land, working for a Landlord, or performing petty jobs such as pulling carts, cleaning streets, constructing and repairing roads, and other labor-intensive jobs. They receive a very very small wage—just enough to survive. Cruori that enter debt can be forced to work as indentured servants or serfs until their debt is paid off. While slavery is illegal, it is not… too uncommon for deeply indebted Cruori to be snatched from fields and then forced to work in the mines as a slave.
Nomad
Non-working individuals of society are considered nomads, and are sometimes poorly looked at because they do not live that much differently than mere Haerla. They graze or hunt in the wilderness for themselves, and move from location to location as things go. Some are gypsies, offering services such as fortune-telling and fate-reading. Nomadic healers, priests, and wandering sage-teachers are a class of nomad.
Illegals and Rogues
There is a significant population of Thieves, Assassins, Spies, and ex-criminals in Himaryn. Why is the occupation so popular? Well, you could say the government is typically rather negligent of the crime prevalent in Himaryn society. Entire Organizations such as the Sha’za have risen from dealings in black market goods, the slave market, narcotics, and banned spells. Think Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars when you think about the Sha’za Crime Organization, and they’re always willing to employed talented individuals.
