Gender;; Female
Age;; 40 Chantings
Species;; Chital Deer (or Spotted Deer)
Affinity;; Terra - Medial
Clan;; Cruori
Occupation/Rank;; Tennant Farmer
Tome(s);; none
Appearance;; Kabocha is named after winter squash, primarily because of her delicate frame and season of birth. In her young age, she was very much fawned over and adored because of her abnormally large and cute-looking spots, though she frequently grew ill due to her weak constitution. While adorable-ness gained her popularity as a fawn, Kabocha was much less liked as she grew older when seasonal colds and chills rendered her unable to help the herd. As a spotted deer, Kabocha has a mildly pretty coloration and an essence of pale slightness and delicate bone structure. She is not capable of running for too long before being affected by exhaustion due to poor lungs. Her natural magical affinity (medial Terra) is however unusually strong, as she has never taken a lesson of any sort in her life.
History;; Kabocha’s family is a tenant farming family part of the Kosov Herd (based in the Peasant Farmlands of the Great East-West Road). They are specifically employed by a nouveau-riche Salommite landlord, for whom they have been farming for generations. Chantings ago in the Fuyu family history, one of Kabocha’s ancestors entered debt and owed several thousand talcs to the current Salommite landlord. To pay off this debt (like many other current Cruori families), this ancestor sold his family into indentured servitude promising to work the land until the balance reaches zero.
As a result, the Fuyu family (like many other Cruori tenant farmers), have been working without pay in the peripheral farmlands of city Kosov, legally forced to repay their debt in a system similar to serfdom. They are not allowed to leave the Plantations without the Master’s (or Landlord’s) consent.
Kabocha was born in this dirt-poor situation as the only daughter of her parents. Since her family is forced to spend all their time and energy using their Terra elemental affinity to grow crops (later to be sold in City Kosov), they have little time to graze for themselves. The Master does not permit them eat the crop they harvest themselves, as that is market produce to be sold. He also demands unreasonable quotas of crops to be grown, and increases the Fuyu family debt when they are unable to make a production quota. As a result, there is no foreseeable time in the future when the Fuyu family will ever be able to repay their debt. While “slavery is illegal” in Himaryn, the unfair way many landowners treat their farmers makes their “indentured servitude” existence effectively slavery except in a better sounding light.
Kabocha’s dream is to escape from her current life. However, she fears running away because she and her family would be thrown into Debtor’s Prison according to Himaryn Law if any of them were ever caught.
Personality;; Despite having grown up in a poor and misfortunate environment, Kabocha has grown up generally as a lively and positively-minding doe. She is not easily shaken by adversary, and even when her frequent illness drove away friends in her youth, Kabocha was still capable of laughing, playing, and finding others to spend time with. Her nature makes her appear light-hearted and cheerful even with those Kabocha does not particularly like. However, be warned—she has very strong opinions about what is right and wrong, particularly topics pertaining to the unfair system that forces her family and herd to continuously work on farms without any hope of freedom. While she is not likely to get violent (and probably be helpless if a discussion turned that way), her oral battling skills are renowned for their outspokenness and brazenness.
